ALF / TREATMENT OF TMJ DISORDER

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction, or TMJ is a common condition that affects many people. It is commonly caused by the misalignment of the jaws and is responsible for many symptoms:
  • Chronic headaches and facial pain
  • Chronic neck and back pain
  • Ringing in the ears and ear pain
  • Clenching and grinding of the teeth
Those who suffer from TMJ dysfunction also report that their symptoms generally worsen during periods of prolonged or unexpected stress.
The clenching and grinding teeth symptoms are particularly common and usually occur at night. If allowed to continue, the grinding and clenching will eventually erode the surfaces of the teeth and lead to much more severe dental problems in the future. Without treatment, TMJ dysfunction is one of the prime underlying factors in eroded jawbones and loose teeth.
The vast majority of people with symptoms of TMJ dysfunction are unaware that the root cause of these problems is something that a dentist can provide effective treatment for.
It is possible for Dr. Vann to realign or adjust the teeth without the need for painful or expensive surgeries by using what is known as an Advance Lightwire Functional Appliance (ALF). The ALF is a dental appliance similar to a wire retainer. It gently applies force to the upper and lower jaws to realign them. By doing so, the ALF is able to correct many types of structural distortions of the jaw. The ALF may also be used in the treatment of problems in other parts of the body such as the upper neck and shoulders and even the lower back, given the effect that misaligned jaws can have on the rest of your body.

The Relationship of Jaw Misalignment and Cranial Motion

For many years osteopathic literature has reported the existence of a rhythmic movement of the skull. This movement, occurring at rate of 8-12 times per minute persists throughout life. It is considered to be a vital life force required for the circulation of cerebrospinal fluid.  Cranial movement is constant, but can be restricted by the occurrence of various patterns of jaw misalignment. There are seven types of jaw misalignment. Orthodontic diagnosis is currently centered in the Angle Classification system supplemented by soft tissue behavior analysis, temporomandibular joint evaluation and especially by use of the side view skull x-ray.  By adding the cranial pattern description as a diagnostic method the identification and understanding of the distorted bite fit becomes much more refined and provides clarity in recognizing the underlying cause of the distorted bite fit.
